There’s something magical about Central New York in the fall. (I grew up in the area, so I admit, I may be a little biased). Autumn truly transforms this destination into a stunning tapestry of warm colors and crisp air, making it the perfect time to visit. The Finger Lakes region is the heart of this seasonal beauty, offering a range of activities that capture the spirit of fall while showcasing the natural wonders of the area.

Exploring the Finger Lakes Region

The Finger Lakes region is famous for its picturesque lakes and vineyards, but the fall season reveals an even deeper beauty. The rolling hills and expansive woodlands ignite in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, making every drive feel like a scenic tour. Late September through roughly the third week in October is your best bet for maximum color (depending on the year). This area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and offers plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the season.

Fall Activities in the Region

The Finger Lakes region is home to countless fall festivals and seasonal activities. Whether you’re looking to go on a scenic hike, explore a pumpkin patch, or sample local cider, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate the season.

Apple picking is one of the highlights of fall, and the region’s orchards offer a great way to spend a crisp autumn afternoon. Stopping by a local orchard, such as Beak & Skiff, for apples and cider is a must-do activity. Watching the cider press at Hollenbeck's Cider Mill is another treat--make sure to check their schedule so you are there for the hot donuts. If pumpkins are more your thing, consider a visit to Tim's Pumpkin Patch in Marietta.

Exploring Ithaca

No trip to the region would be complete without spending some time in Ithaca. This charming city, nestled at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, has a vibrant culture. The city comes alive in the fall, and the cool weather makes it the perfect time to visit.

A stop at Ithaca Bakery offers an excellent range of baked goods and meals, with a relaxed, local vibe. And if you're wanting a warm, hearty bowl after a crisp outdoor hike, I highly recommend Maru Ramen in the College Town area.

Ithaca also has its fair share of fall festivities, from farmer’s markets to local festivals celebrating the season’s bounty. Whether you’re hiking Buttermilk Falls, walking the campus of Cornell University, or visiting one of the many nearby orchards, there’s always something to do.

A Fall Getaway to Remember

Central New York’s Finger Lakes region is the perfect autumn destination. The waterfalls, the foliage, and the fall activities all combine to create a perfect escape. Whether you’re an adventurer, a foodie, or someone who just loves soaking in the beauty of nature, the region has something to offer. Each visit leaves me excited for the next, as this area never fails to deliver a perfect autumn experience. For me, it's a touch of home that I'm proud to share!
