As someone who’s been lucky enough to preview Universal’s Epic Universe twice, I can confidently say this park is going to be a game-changer for theme park fans. From its intuitive layout to jaw-dropping theming, Epic Universe manages to feel both grand and surprisingly manageable. It’s clear a lot of thought went into designing this park—not only in the attractions but in the way guests move and interact with each world.

The park layout is incredibly easy to navigate and doesn’t overwhelm. It is broken down into 5 portals that each feel very separate from the others, as if you are entering a different world each time you step through a new gateway. Strategic seating areas and water stations are plentiful, helping you recharge between adventures. There’s intentional resting areas throughout, and traffic flow has been handled thoughtfully. Visually, Epic Universe impresses by day—but it’s after sunset when it becomes truly breathtaking. The lighting adds a dramatic flair that transforms the entire atmosphere.

Super Nintendo World: A Gamer’s Dream Come to Life

If you grew up with Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, Super Nintendo World is pure nostalgia wrapped in cutting-edge technology. The main attraction, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, was a blast to experience. As someone prone to motion sickness, I was pleased that I handled it well. The ride balances fun gameplay with immersive visuals through the use of VR headsets and spot-on character theming in a moving cart.

Interactive elements abound thanks to RF-enabled Power-Up Bands, which sync with various games and challenges throughout the land. Yoshi’s Adventure is a charming, slow-paced ride that’s perfect for younger visitors or anyone needing a break from intensity. We rode it twice and noticed new elements each time. The only letdown for me in Super Nintendo Land was the Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness ride—it felt short and jarring, though the theming in that section is absolutely adorable and shouldn't be skipped. And don’t miss the Super Star Lemon Squash drink at Toadstool Cafe—it’s bright, fun, and ridiculously tasty. Order it with a Piranha Plant Caprese just so you can rest in a brilliantly-Nintendo-themed restaurant.

Isle of Berk: Dragons, Vikings, and Pure Joy

Fans of How to Train Your Dragon will fall in love with Berk. From atmospheric music to playful character meet-and-greets (I was downright giddy to meet Toothless!), this area nails the brief. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a fast but smooth coaster, full of whimsy and excitement. Dragon Racer’s Rally and Fyre Drill offer somewhat tamer fun with Fyre Drill being a great way to cool off on a warm day. Berk also houses a live-action show and has a variety of characters wandering and greeting guests.

Food-wise, we tried a Mac & Cheese cone in this land—the PBandJ version with pork, bacon, and jam was savory and satisfying. We also ate at Mead Hall, where the vegan burger had an unusual texture but great flavor, enhanced by a tangy aioli that I’d gladly eat again.

The Wizarding World: Ministry of Magic

Walking into the Ministry of Magic portal is like stepping into the movie itself. The queue alone is an experience, complete with a magical “floo” transport effect that sets the tone for the attraction ahead. The ride is a sensory marvel—visually rich, well-paced, and incredibly immersive. I closed my eyes briefly to avoid triggering motion sickness but otherwise found it totally manageable and wouldn't have missed this attraction.

Wandering the magical Parisian streets with a butterbeer in hand was easily one of my favorite moments. Be sure to stop at Café L’air de la Sirène—the Baguette de Dinde with turkey, brie, and apple butter was my favorite meal of the day. I only wish my stomach would have fit another meal, as the crepes looked delectable! And yes, interactive wands work throughout the land, with a wand shop located right in the portal.

Celestial Park: Open Skies and High-Speed Thrills

This central hub area offers a peaceful yet engaging atmosphere. At it's heart, this area features a stunning fountain that puts on frequent shows that are synced with music, along with excellent views of the Helios Hotel. Celestial Park is also home to Stardust Racers, an exhilarating roller coaster that’s easily the most intense I’ve ever experienced. It’s lightning fast and borderline terrifying (in a fun way) without being nauseating—a must-ride for coaster fans. For the young and young-at-heart, a visit to Constellation Carousel will delight with this modern take on the merry-go-round. There are numerous quick service food options in this area as well as several sit-down restaurants. For pizza lovers, you can't go wrong with a visit to Pizza Moon for a slice while taking in the sights and sounds of a theater reminiscent of the 1902 George Méliès film "A Trip to the Moon".

Dark Universe: A Love Letter to Classic Monsters

This portal is a must for fans of Universal’s original monster legacy. The land is spooky in a fun, stylized way. Meeting Frankenstein’s monster and his bride was an unexpected treat—they were hilarious! The main ride, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, features impressive animatronics and a rich storyline, though the spinning and tilting elements were a bit much for me personally. For those seeking another thrill in Darkmoor Village, Curse of the Werewolf offers a spinning roller coaster of fun. You can truly immerse yourself in all things monsters by opting for the monster makeover. This makeup experience will garnish oohs and ahhs from other park guests. Just be mindful that, once your makeover is complete, you will not be allowed to purchase alchohol in the park--unless, of course, your drivers license photo is reminiscent of a ghoulish creature!

Parents wondering if this portal is too scary for kids: it really depends on your child. There are creepy visuals and some intense moments, but no jump scares. If your child enjoys spooky fun, they’ll likely be fine. If not, it might be one to approach mindfully.

For dinner, we ate at Das Stakehaus and had the “bird on a stake”—marinated chicken with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. It was hearty and flavorful, though the portal’s mocktail didn’t quite live up to the one I had in Super Nintendo World.

Final Thoughts: Epic Indeed

There’s something truly special about stepping into a brand-new theme park, and Epic Universe captures that childlike wonder in every corner. It’s thoughtfully designed, with ample space, shaded areas and easily accessible hydration stations, and good crowd control. While everyone can appreciate the stunning environments, the park really shines for ride lovers—you’ll get the most out of your visit if you’re willing to explore every portal.

My advice? Once the park officially opens, consider upgrading to the Express Pass. The quality and popularity of the rides mean long lines are inevitable. The team at Universal has done a phenomenal job, and I can’t wait to return and experience the magic all over again!
