1. Travel Documents
First things first, don't forget your passport and cruise itinerary! These documents are your golden tickets to explore stunning ports of call. Make photocopies of them, too, just in case. Better safe than sorry! Many countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity left before its expiration date for entry. So, go get that passport out and ensure your expiration dates are far enough into the future to accommodate your next adventure. If you are traveling with any medical conditions or medications, it can also be helpful to carry this information with you as well in either a printout of your prescriptions or a doctor's note.
2. Comfortable Shoes
Planning to explore new cities or take part in activities onboard? A couple of pairs of comfortable shoes are a must. Think supportive walking shoes for shore excursions and flip-flops for lounging by the pool. Your feet will thank you! European infrastructure can include all kinds of terrain. High heels and brand new shoes that haven't been broken in can turn a carefree day into a hunt for pharmacies and bandaids.
3. Spending Money
How much you'll need is personal and subjective. To be honest, I have very seldom used or needed cash outside of the US. Most locations in Europe accept credit cards for all purchases. I tend to play it safe and usually order a small amount of foreign currency from my bank before my trip--just to be sure I can pay for small necessities along the way. If you'd rather wait until you arrive at your destination, there are usually ample places to convert your cash--just research ahead of time to find the best places to do those conversions, as some places will charge hefty fees. I really don't love carrying large amounts of cash. I find that bringing 2-3 credit cards is the best way to go--JUST MAKE SURE YOUR BANK DOES NOT CHARGE FOREIGN TRANSACTION FEES. Those can add up quickly. If you are traveling with a friend or family member, diversify your cards. Each of you should carry a different credit card and/or keep one in your cabin safe. That can save you many headaches in the event that you lose your wallet or some other unfortunate snafu occurs.
4. Toiletries
While most cruises provide basic toiletries, it’s a good idea to bring your favorites. From your favorite shampoo to sunscreen, having your go-to products can make a significant difference in your comfort level while onboard. That brand your loyal to here in the States may not be available overseas. Just make sure you are sticking to TSA requirements on liquids when packing these items.
5. Medications and First Aid
Pack a small first aid kit with essentials, like Band-Aids, pain relievers, and any prescription medications you may need. It’s better to be prepared for minor mishaps than to be caught off guard in a foreign port. And, always pack extras of the medications that you must take daily. Missed connections and travel delays can happen, and it's always best to have one less worry. On the topic of medications, most cruise ship medical centers will be equipped with medications for sea sickness. Talk to your doctor before leaving home to find out your options if you are concerned about motion sickness. There are both prescription and over-the-counter remedies that can keep your sea legs under you. The vast majority of people will not experience sea sickness on larger, modern cruise ships--even if they typically get woozy on the random car trip or roller coaster. Modern ships are equipped with stabilizers that keep you sailing smoothly most of the time. An ounce of prevention, though, is always worth that pound of cure.
6. Lightweight, Color-Compatible Clothing
The weather can change from port to port, so pack layers. Lightweight clothing will keep you comfortable during the day and dries quickly if it gets wet. Don’t forget a light jacket for cooler evenings. Choose fabrics that are breathable, easy to pack, and work within the same color scheme! This allows you to mix and match pieces to create a variety of outfits without overpacking. It is completely feasible to cruise Europe out of a carry on. I've done it and highly recommend it.
7. AirTags or other GeoTrackers
These handy little buttons can be thrown into all of your luggage, carryons and purses. Getting to your cruise destination can involve air travel and checked items. If you want to be able to keep track of all of your belongings, especially if you have connecting flights, Apple AirTags are a must. Worried about leaving a bag behind? These little helpers can alert you when something has been left behind.
8. Power Bank and Chargers
With all the photos you'll be snapping and maps you'll be navigating, a power bank is essential. Ensure your devices stay charged while you're out exploring or lounging by the pool. A European power adapter can come in handy as well. Just check with your travel agent or cruise line to ensure they allow converters on the ship. Some cruise lines have updated their policies to prohibit their use in an attempt to keep passengers from overloading circuits.
9. Reusable Water Bottle
Stay hydrated while being eco-friendly! A reusable water bottle is perfect for those shore excursions and will save you money onboard. Plus, you can refill it throughout the day, keeping you refreshed and energized! Many places in Europe have access to free public fountains to help keep you hydrated while you explore. Here's a packing tip: To maximize space, pack your clean socks or other small items inside the water bottle.
10. A Packable Day Bag and/or Duffle.
Finally, don't forget all of those amazing souvenirs you plan to buy! I usually will fold a lightweight day bag to take on excursions. I can then pack this bag full of all of my goodies for the trip home. If you anticipate buying even more, I suggest ordering a lightweight, foldable bag from Amazon--such as a Veno Bag. These sturdy but collapsible moving bags can be locked with a zipper lock. Should you find some must-have treasures on your vacation, simply place your dirty clothes in the Veno bag, lock it, and check the bag on the way home. Your souvenirs can then comfortably and safely travel in your carry on.
